TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMPS
The Cub baseball team successfully defended its Tri-Valley League championship on Monday despite losing both of their final regular season games to Caney Valley.
They dropped game one 10-0 and game two 7-5. They end the regular season, 17-3.
In game one, the Cubs werent just scoreless, they were hitless as well. Caney grabbed a 4-0 lead after the third inning and piled on three runs in the fourth and fifth to get the run-rule.
Junior Dagen Goodner was Humboldts lone baserunner after receiving the teams lone walk. The Cubs struck-out 13 times in the game.
Senior Josh Vanatta earned the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out two batters.
Humboldt committed seven fielding errors in the game.
Things went somewhat better in game two. The Cubs took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning but had that wiped away after Caney scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
Humboldt crawled back on top, scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth innings but the Bulldogs held on, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put them up 7-5.
The Cubs had a shot to do something in the sixth and seventh innings but couldnt make it happen.
Goodner got the start and the loss, allowing six runs on six hits including a home run and four walks with a strikeout.
Taylor Lassman was the only Cub to record a multi-hit game, grabbing two hits and two RBIs.
The Cubs will be off until next Monday and Wednesday when they host the 3A regional tournament. As of press time, seeding for the tournament has not been released.
