CHERRYVALE — Humboldt High’s Cubs had three home runs in their 13 hits Tuesday night and a strong pitching performance helped the Cubs claim a 7-3 win.
It was the only game the Cubs and host Cherryvale High’s Chargers got in before a thunderstorm halted action. The Cubs are back at Cherryvale today to finish the Tri-Valley League doubleheader.
“It was a good outing against a solid Cherryvale team,” said Mike Miller, Humboldt head coach. “We had guys come up with some big hits in key situations.”
Grayson Pearish went the distance on the mound for the win. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five.
“Grayson pitched very efficiently. Our defense made plays behind him to give the confidence to go right at the hitters,” Miller said.
Caleb Vanatta and Caleb D’Armond were both 3-for-4 at the plate for Humboldt. Vanatta hit a single, a double and a home run. D’Armond connected for two singles and a double.
Seth Nickell cranked out a three-run home run in the fourth to put the Cubs up 5-0 at the time. Cherryvale scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Pearish helped himself at the plate as he hit a solo home run and a single. Alex Murrow had two singles. Hunter Murrow and Nick Wiltse each had a base hit.
This came after the Cubs went 3-1 last week. All three wins were over TVL rival Yates Center High’s Wildcats.
The Cubs swept the league doubleheader last Tuesday, winning 11-3 and 12-2. Pearish and Vanatta pitched in the first game and Nathan Whitcomb had a complete game in the second contest.

Yates Center scored seven runs in the second and Humboldt had a seven-run fourth. The difference was the Cubs scored three runs in the first and two in the third.
