CHERRYVALE-It took a comeback but Humboldt High’s Cubs snagged a win Friday night on the Cherryvale High Chargers’ home court, 58-46.
A flat start had the Cubs down early. Humboldt was outscored 21-12 in the opening period.
“We came out n the first quarter and kind of laid an egg,” said Dave Taylor, Cubs head coach. “We weren’t really focused on what we were trying to run offensively.”
After Taylor implemented a few adjustment, the Cubs were back in business, forcing 13 second-period points to the Chargers’ five. Cherryvale took a one-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Cubs carried the momentum from the second period into the third. With the help of solid free throw shooting – Humboldt shot 12 of 19 from the charity stripe – the Cubs took the lead midway through the third quarter and never looked back. The Chargers were outscored 33-20 in the final two periods as they lost to their Tri-Valley League rivals.
“To the kids credit, they really battled back,” Taylor said. “The boys turned up the pressure and started flashing to the open spots against the zone, and we did some good things that way.”
Helping the Cubs push their record to 5-3 on the season was Noah Thornbrugh with a game-high 17 points and three assists. Thornbrugh pulled in 13 rebounds on the night, as well. Coming off the bench, Blake Crawford added 10 points for the Cubs.
The Charger offense was led by Cody O’Brien with 11 points.
