Cub boys and girls get home wins over Bluestem

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt’s boys and girls basketball came away with wins at home Tuesday night versus Leon-Bluestem. 

The Cub boys romped to a 68-47 win while the girls had to put together a strong second half effort for their 55-45 victory.

The wins move the Humboldt boys up to 8-7 overall and girls to 7-7. 

The Cub boys came out firing in the first half, scoring 40 points in the first two quarters but it was their defensive performance coming out of the half that sealed the deal. 

The Cubs held the Lions to just five third quarter points while adding another 14 to push their lead to 22. Bluestem outscored Humboldt in the fourth quarter by a point, 15-14. 

“They played loose,” head coach David Taylor said. “Tonight was the first time this season where we weren’t our own worst enemy.” 

Junior Conor Haviland had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for Humboldt followed by 19 for senior Bo Bigelow and 13 for senior Caleb Coronado.

The Cub junior varsity also beat Bluestem, 48-37 led by Kaden Barnett. The C-Team won 49-28 led by nine from Thane Meadows. 

Meanwhile, the Humboldt girls pulled off a second-half comeback in their win. After trailing 24-18 at the half, the Lady Cubs buckled down and rallied for a 55-45 win. 

Individual stats were unavailable. 

The Cubs will travel to Fredonia on Thursday before wrapping up the week with a trip to Central Heights on Friday.
