Humboldt baseball and softball’s dominant early run continued on Monday when they hit the road to take on Leon-Bluestem.

Both teams swept the Lions with three of the games ending in massive, double-digit blowouts.

Baseball won 24-3 and 19-3 while softball won 7-4 and 19-1. Both teams are 6-0.

The baseball Cubs turned an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one to a 12-0 lead by the second inning and then added another 12 runs in the third. Bluestem managed just three runs in second and third innings which forced a three-inning, run-rule win for Humboldt.

Senior Dagen Goodner got the start and went 2 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one batter.

Gunner Elder and Conor Haviland each had three hits in the game followed by two by Taylor Lassman and Jackson Aikins. One of Lassman’s hits was a home run.

The Cubs were just as dominant in game two but they managed to spread their scoring out a bit more.

They went up 3-0 after the first inning just like they did in game one and added 11 more in the second and third innings but couldn’t get to a 15 run advantage before the fifth inning.

By the fifth, they were up 19-3 which was more than enough to trigger the run-rule at the end of the inning.

“We were really good at the plate in both games tonight,” head coach Mike Miller said. “Our hitters were aggressive and we jumped on them early in both games. I thought our pitchers did a good job of pitching with leads and never allowed them to get back in the game.”

Gunner Elder got the start and went for two innings, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Xavier Bauer came in after that and pitched two hitless innings before Kaiden Barnett closed it all out in the fifth.

Elder had four hits and Haviland three, including a home run. Cooper Jaro had two hits.

Lady Cub softball had a semi-close affair in game one after taking an early 5-2 lead after the fourth inning.

Bluestem managed to cut that to 6-4 after the fifth but Lady Cub pitcher Brooklyn Ellis was able to hold the Lady Lions off in the final two innings to secure the win.

Ellis went the full seven innings and allowed just four runs on 14 hits and four walks while striking out eight.
