WICHITA — Crest High’s Jordan Morton just got into the finals of the Kansas Class 1A boys’ javelin finals Saturday morning. He was sitting in eighth place with a throw of 157 feet, 8 inches.
Morton, a junior, was first up in the finals on the javelin runway. He made it count. Morton’s first finals throw went 169’6” and moved him up in the standings.
Morton claimed the sixth-place state medal in the Class 1A javelin event at the 2012 Kansas High School All-Class State Track and Field Championships. Morton was the Three Rivers League javelin champion.
The state track meet was held at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium Friday and Saturday.
“That’s my best throw ever,” Morton said. “Last year I finished 12th in the javelin so I’m really happy about taking sixth this year. It was awesome standing up on the podium receiving my medal.”
Morton said he was a little nervous going in to the competition “but I felt if I could get to the finals I could win a medal.”
Also on Saturday, Crest senior Jayden Bowen finished 14th in the 1A boys’ shot put with a throw of 41’1 1/2”. In the girl’s shot put on Friday, Crest junior Kurston Gilliland was ninth at 35’3 1/2”, which was five inches away from qualifying for the finals in the event.
Crest senior Katrina Strickler also missed the finals by four inches in the Class 1A girls’ javelin on Friday. She ended up ninth with a throw of 110’2”.
Southern Coffey County High senior Ashton Isch finished her Lady Titan career taking 13th in the Class 1A girls’ triple jump Saturday. Isch had a leap of 31’6”.
Sarah Webb, a SCCH junior, ended up 16th in the 1A girls’ high jump Friday afternoon. She cleared the bar at 4’6”.
