COLONY — Crest High made sure Senior Night would be a successful one early on Friday.
The Lancers raced to a 25-7 lead against Yates Center and never looked back in a 67-28 victory.
“We played with really good energy,” Lancer head coach Dakotah Sporing said. “Sometimes with games like this, it can be easy to mess around. The guys ran the floor very well.”
Crest senior Ryan Golden led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Sophomore Drake Weir added 11 points, five boards and four steals. Rogan Weir scored 10. Jacob Zimmerman added nine points and four assists. Levi Prasko also had three assists.
Despite the loss, Yates Center head coach Lane Huffman noted his team’s marked improvement against a tough defense.
“We were much better in breaking the press,” Huffman said. “Typically, teams would press us all the way to halftime, but we were able to break it. It was what we did after we broke the press I didn’t like. We made improvements, but as always, we struggled to score points.”
Yates Center’s Devereaux Sarchet, the lone senior on an otherwise underclassman-dominated roster, scored 16 to lead the Wildcats.
“He’s taken his game to another level,” Huffman said. “If you look at his last 10 games, he’s averaging 15 to 20 points a game.
“We’re super young, and we knew we were gonna have growing pains with our freshman,” Huffman continued. “But it’s starting to click. It’s a good thing we’ll get them back for three more years.”
The schools may play again soon.
Crest (10-9) has earned a first-round bye in the upcoming Class 1A-I Sub-State Tournament, while Yates Center (2-17) will travel to Madison/Hamilton (9-10) at 7 p.m. Thursday. The winner takes on Crest Feb. 29 in Rosalia for the semifinals.
