Crest, Southern Coffey County sending track athletes to state

BURLINGTON — Crest High sophomore Kurston Gilliland has another shot at a state medal in Kansas Class 1A shot put. She ended up 10th in the event as a freshman last year at the state meet.
Gilliland captured a Kansas Class 1A Regional Track meet shot put championship last Friday. She won the event with a throw of 36 feet, 2 inches at the Class 1A regional hosted by Southern Coffey County High School at Burlington High’s track facility.
Gilliland also advanced the state meet in Class 1A javelin competition as she was third at the regional with a throw of 114’1”. Gilliland will be joined by eight other area athletes at this weekend’s Kansas All-Class State Track and Field Championship meet in Wichita.
The state meet is at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. A complete schedule for area high school athletes at the state meet will be in Wednesday’s Register.
Southern Coffey County senior Colin Kraft goes after state medals in the hurdle races. Kraft claimed the silver medal in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.96 seconds at the regional. He finished second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 39.87 seconds.
Junior Jenna Witteman of Southern Coffey County advanced to state in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. She was second in the regional 100 meters in 13.50 seconds and placed third in the 200 in 27.93 seconds.
Southern Coffey County junior Ashton Isch, who didn’t get to compete in last year’s regional because of an injury, earned the bronze medal in the triple jump. Isch had a leap of 33 feet. She placed fourth in the state triple jump as a freshman.
Three area boys are headed to the state meet in the Class 1A javelin. Senior Ryan True of Southern Coffey County was the silver medalist at the regional with a throw of 159’9”. Crest senior Dakota Ramsey placed third at 159’7” and sophomore Jordan Morton took fourth at 156’1”.
Crest junior Jayden Bowen qualified in two events. He placed third in the shot put with a throw of 42’7” and was fourth in the discus with a toss of 125’7”.

Girls

 

Crest senior Ashley Catt placed eighth in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 48.50 seconds. Southern Coffey County’s Isch was ninth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 54.78 seconds.
In the shot put, Breanna Isch of Southern Coffey County was 11th at 28’31⁄2” and Crest senior Amber Tinsley was 15th at 26’2”. Gilliland placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 88’10”.
Crest’s Shayla Stephens was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 104’9”.  Southern Coffey County’s Katelyn Rogers was seventh at 97’7” and Keasha Parks was ninth at 88’6”. Crest’s Katrina Strickler was 11th in the event with a toss of 81’8”.

Boys

Crest’s Ramsey finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 40’53⁄4” and seventh in the discus at 120’8”. Kyle Hammond, Crest, placed eighth in the discus with a distance of 117’9”.
Hammond finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 19’31⁄4”. In the 800-meter run, Crest’s David Womelsdorf (2:15.52) and Trevor Holman (2:16.78) were 10th and 11th, respectively.
Crest’s 4×800-meter relay team of Chris Brallier, Dustin Davis-Jones, Holman and Womelsdorf was eighth in 9:32.11.
