ST. PAUL — Efficient pitching and dangerous hitting, much the same recipe Crest High has followed all season, powered their baseball team to a pair of victories at St. Paul on Monday.
The Lancers struck early at the plate while pitchers Trevor Church and Stetson Setter worked ahead of batters and made quick work of St. Paul’s lineup in 12-0 and 16-3 wins.
Game one
Crest scored eight runs through the first three innings and Church allowed only one base runner through five innings, and no hits, in a 12-0 victory. The only St. Paul baserunner came on a second-inning walk.
Setter got the ball rolling for Crest batters when he drilled a solo home run over the left field fence. Holden Barker then reached first base on an error and scored on a Rogan Weir RBI single for the 2-0 lead.
The Lancers brought home six more runs in the third inning beginning with Jack White walking and later scoring on a Weir sacrifice fly. Setter walked, Barker singled, Avery Blaufuss walked, Ryan Golden singled and Jenson Barker singled. All of the above scored for the 8-0 lead.
Four more Lancer runs were plated in the fourth. Weir and Blaufuss each walked and scored bases-loaded walks. Golden walked and scored on a Church single. Jensen Barker walked and scored on a double play.
Golden led with two hits and Blaufuss walked a team-high three times.
Game two
Setter allowed two runs, with the first in the bottom of the first inning.
Church got the hitting started with a single. He scored on a Setter RBI single. Setter then scored on a Weir RBI error. Holden Barker reached on a fielder’s choice and also scored on Weir’s RBI error for the 4-0 lead.
Kiser Wiatrak singled to lead off the bottom of the first for St. Paul, scoring on a Trey Peters RBI single to right field to cut into the deficit and make it a 4-1 game.
The Lancers responded in the third inning, scoring seven runs.
In the bottom of the third, Vincent Smith reached base on an error and scored on a Landen Beachner RBI fielder’s choice for the Indians. Smith walked and scored on a Zakary Kirkpatrick RBI double to left field for the 16-3 final score.
Crest finished with 11 hits. Church and Setter each collected three.
