MOUND CITY — Roland Weir isn’t fond of losing.
That said, he found plenty to like in Crest High’s doubleheader at Jayhawk-Linn.
The Lancers dropped a game for the first time this season after 13 straight wins in a 7-3 setback at Jayhawk-Linn.
This came after Crest rolled to a 12-3 win in the opener.
The split puts Crest at 13-1 as they gear up for a home doubleheader on Thursday against Humboldt.
“Well, it was bound to happen at some point,” Weir said of the defeat. “There’s an old cliche about you never want to lose a game, but it wasn’t a bad loss, and probably happened at a good time.
“We didn’t play poorly, and we didn’t beat ourselves,” he continued. “We just couldn’t get a hit when we needed it.”
Crest went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the los, despite striking out only once as a team in the game.
“We just the ball right at them or popped it up a lot of the time,” Weir noted. “I tip my cap to Jayhawk-Linn.”
Crest led 3-0, but the Jayhawks responded. “They got the hits when they needed to.”
Avery Blaufuss gave up eight hits and struck out two. Jack White came on in relief and surrendered three hits with a strikeout.
Blaufuss and Trevor Church each had a pair of hits, while Holden Barker had the only extra-base hit, a double. Kobey Miller and Tyson Hermreck added singles.
THE OPENER was much more to Weir’s liking.
Church picked up the win, allowing six hits and two runs over six innings. He struck out three. Stetson Setter allowed three hits with a strikeout in relief.
“Jayhawk hitters did a good job of making Trevor work for everything tonight,” Weir said.
Barker paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with a double and five RBIs. Setter had two hits, including a triple, with two RBIs.
