COLONY — The Crest and Southern Coffey County High basketball teams tipped off their regular season with some blowout victories on Thursday night.

The SCC girls defeated Crest in the opening game, 38-22, before the Lancer boys knocked off the Titans of Southern Coffey in the nightcap, 66-18.

The Lady Titans dominated the glass in their season opener, outscoring the Lady Lancers in the paint, 18-16.

Southern Coffey County came out in the first quarter and were aided by two-pointers by Josie Weers, Karley Ohl and Jalea True. Crest attempted to work the ball inside but couldn’t get much going as Kayla Hermreck went up for a layup and Cursten Allen sank a pair of two-pointers to open up the game.

Kaydence Gunlock knocked down a three-pointer in the second quarter while True scored twice for the 20-11 halftime lead.

“I was really pleased with the girls’ intensity,” said Southern Coffey County head coach Jeff True. “I thought they played hard and gave it 100% the whole game. We’ve got four girls that played a lot of varsity ball a year ago and then we’ve got five others that we’re just trying to figure out where they’ll fit in. All in all, I was happy with tonight.”

Weers found her stroke in the second half after she hit a three-pointer, a two-pointer and a trio of free throws. True also dropped in a layup to help the Lady Titans take a 32-14 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

True’s team wasn’t finished there as Ross Snovelle was good for a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, her second of the night, and Gunlock went up for a layup and a free throw. Hermreck dropped in a pair of two-pointers but it wasn’t enough as Southern Coffey won, 38-22.

“The three seniors that played a lot of the minutes tonight, Jalea True, Josie and Ross are who the girls look to,” True said. “Those girls have been playing varsity ball for four years. I’ve been really happy with those three girls all year, a good group of seniors.”

Weers led the Lady Titans’ offensive attack with 12 points, followed by True’s eight and Snovelle, Gunlock and Ohl’s six points apiece. True led with four two-pointers.

Crest was led offensively by Hermreck’s nine points, Allen’s six and Karlee Boots and McKenna Hammond’s three points apiece. Hermreck led her team after sinking four baskets from inside the three-point line.

“I was probably more happy on the defensive end than the offensive end. I didn’t feel like Crest got a lot of real good looks at the basket,” said True. “I thought our defensive intensity was good and we were able to get to the free throw line.”

Southern Coffey County travels to Hartford on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. while Crest hosts Erie next Tuesday night.
