In the April 7 Weekender edition, the Register reported that Iola sophomore Elysia Kunkler broke the school long jump record at the Paola track meet on April 5 with a jump of 16 feet, 11.5 inches.

The previous record was held by Jolene Riley and was set when she was a junior in 1977. However, Riley went on to break that record again in her senior year in 1978.

At a track meet in Chanute, she broke both a school and meet record with a jump of 18 feet, 7¼ inches. At the same meet, she broke the school high jump record.

When Kunkler found out that she did not break the record she had this to say in an email: “I found out today that I actually didn’t break the school record. I wish I did. But (Marv Smith) told me that Jolene jumped 16’11” her junior year and then her awesome jump was her senior year, so I have hope and I’ll keep trying, 16’11.5” was still a personal record so I’m still proud of that. I appreciate how much everyone supports me.”

The Mustangs and Fillies will compete at Anderson County Thursday where Kunkler will have another shot to improve on her personal record and work toward Riley’s.
