Comeback highlights Fillies tourney play

CHANUTE — A stunning comeback gave Iola High’s freshmen volleyball team second place Saturday at a tournament hosted by Chanute High School.
Trailing 11-2 in the third game of their final match of the day against Anderson County, the Fillies went on a 13-1 run to win the game and match, 19-25, 25-13, 15-12.
“A great day ended with a great comeback,” IHS freshman coach Jeff Fehr said. “The girls fought hard all day. I’m glad their effort was rewarded.”
Iola went 4-1 on the day to secure second place in the tournament.
After dropping their opening match against Chanute Blue, 23-25, 25-14, 15-10, Iola rattled off four straight wins to end their day.
Iola defeated Field Kindley of Coffeyville, 25-3, 25-9, Marmaton Valley, 25-9, 15-25, 15-9, and Chanute Gold, 25-10, 25-17, to set up their thrilling finale against Anderson County.
A trio of Fillies, Toni Macha, Jadyn Sigg, and Riley Murry, had strong games at the service line, Fehr said. Sydney Wade led the team with assists. Macha, Murry and Brooklyn Storrer led the team in kills, and Alexis Heslop had several blocks.

MARMATON Valley’s junior varsity was 3-2 at the tournament in Chanute.
In addition to the loss to Iola, the Wildcats downed host Chanute, 25-8, 25-4; Field Kindley, 25-8, 25-13; and Anderson County, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12. Marmaton Valley also lost to Chanute, 25-11, 25-17.
Kenzie Harrison and Tanna Lutz each had 42 points, whle Shauna Knight and Tessa Olson had 28 points apiece. Misty Storrer had 16 points and Alex Thomas nine. Olson had 18 kills and seven blocks. Storrer had eight kills and two blocks. Thomas and Harrison had four kils each. Lutz and Magie Stevenson eadh chac three kills. Knight also had a kill.
