SALINA – Iola High’s two state wrestling tournament quailfiiers had different starts and different ends to Friday’s opening day.
One stayed alive to wrestle in consolation-bracket action today. The other ended his four-year career as a Mustang wrestler.
Freshman Trey Colborn turned a bad situation into a victory at the 2012 Kansas Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament. The tournament is at Salina’s Bicentennial Center and concludes today.
Colborn found himself behind 2-0 to El Dorado High freshman Jacobb Burnett in their 285-pound match. Burnett had Colborn in a cradle hold, attempting to pin him.
Colborn broke the hold and the switch was on. Colborn caught Burnett on his back as the two rolled out.
Colborn quickly pinned Burnett at the 1:28 mark of the 6-minute match.
That put Colborn in the championship quarterfinals Friday afternoon.

SENIOR DEVIN Culler dropped a 5-4 decision to Baldwin High’s Jason Von Bargen in the 160-pound weight class. Von Bargen got a takedown but Culler tied it 2-2 with a reversal.
With an escape late in the first period, Von Bargen led 3-2 and went up 4-2 escaping Culler’s control in the second period.
Culled forged a 4-4 tie when he scored two points on a takedown. Again, Von Bargen stood up and escaped from Culler’s hold.
Going into final two-minute period with a 5-4 lead, Von Bargen kept Culler from scoring. The loss dropped Culler into the 160-pound consolation bracket.
Colborn faced third-ranked Caleb King of Kansas City-Piper High in the 285-pound championship quarterfinals. King pinned Colborn in 1 minute, 12 seconds.
In the first round of consolation matches Friday afternoon, Culler lost by technical fall, 15-0, to Augusta High senior Chase Wells. Culler finished his senior season with a 30-11 record.
