Eight-man football games will be in the majority among Iola Register area high schools next fall. Five of the seven schools will field eight-man football teams in 2012.
Iola High’s Mustangs and Humboldt High’s Cubs continue to play 11-man football. Kansas football classifications for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 were released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association Tuesday.
Two sets of figures released Tuesday by KSHSAA shifts area high school activities a bit for the next couple of years. It also released the 2011-2012 classifications and enrollment figures Monday.
School classifications for the 2011-12 school year are based on enrollment figures for 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grades. Football classifications are for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years and are based on ninth, 10th & 11th grades only.
Iola remains in the 64-school, Class 4A classification. Enrollment ranges — for every activity for this school year except football — from 717 to 258 students. Pittsburg High School is the largest 4A school in the state at 717. Iola’s reported enrollment as of Sept. 20 was 386.
This year’s enrollment figures affect postseason play in volleyball, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis and cross country this fall for area schools, and basketball and wrestling in the winter and all the spring sports.
Humboldt High has bounced into Class 3A from Class 2A. Humboldt has been in Class 2A for several years now but had played in the 3A ranks for years.
Humboldt’s reported enrollment for all four grades was 168. The Class 3A schools range from 254 to 162 students. Joining Humboldt in the 63-school 3A field is Pittsburg’s St. Mary’s-Colgan High, which has been a perennial powerhouse at Class 2A.
Uniontown (138), Marmaton Valley (107) and Yates Center (125) high schools are in the Class 2A classification. Enrollment range is 158 to 99 students.
Crest High (60) and Southern Coffey High (74) are in Class 1A. Enrollment range for 1A is 99 to 14 students.
Every two years the state uses enrollment figures to determine classifications and district assignments for football. Those assignments are locked in for two years.
Iola High’s Mustangs (296) remain Class 4A in football district play. As does every school in the Southeast Kansas League except Pittsburg. Pittsburg (565)  is one of the smallest Class 5A schools in the football classifications.
Uniontown High’s Eagles are finishing up a two-year stint in Class 3A football district play this season. Starting next year, the Eagles move to Eight-Man Division I football.
“Uniontown has never played eight-man football. We’ve looked at it several times throughout the years but stay with 11-man,” said Jim Mason, UHS athletic director.
“This year we looked over our enrollment numbers and the projections for the next three cycles. We researched by calling other schools that had made the move and got a lot of positive feedback.”
Mason said six of the 10 schools in the Three Rivers League already play eight-man football. It does leave scheduling problems for the other 11-man teams in the league, he said.
“But this is a good thing for our kids and our kids are excited about playing eight-man,” Mason said.
The Three Rivers League area teams include Marmaton Valley and Crest.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats (79) and Yates Center High’s Wildcats (97) remain in Eight-Man Division I.  Crest High’s Lancers (47) and Southern Coffey County High’s Titans (54) shift into Eight-Man Division II from Division I next year.
Humboldt High’s Cubs return to Class 3A competition in football next year. The Cubs had been in Class 2-1A for several years following a long stretch at Class 3A.
Pittsburg-Colgan also moves into Class 3A in football.
Districts for each football classification will be announced next week by the KSHSAA. Assignments for fall regional and substate competition are expected out soon also.
Following is a list of the football classifications for Class 4A, 3A and Eight-Man to determine two-year cycles in district and state play. To see the school classification enrollment list go to kshsaa.org.
