Cavaliers slip past Red Devils

Opportunities to win two games against seventh-ranked Johnson County Community College presented themselves for Allen County Community College’s Red Devils Tuesday.
The Red Devil softball team came up empty both times and lost their opening Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader at home. Johnson County rallied for a 6-5 win in the first game and claimed a 4-2 victory in the second contest.
The Red Devils are 6-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play. They play at Butler Community College in El Dorado Friday, then host Iowa Central on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In a 2-2 tie, the Red Devils manufactured three runs in the bottom of the second inning in the first game. Kelsey Walters had a lead-off single and Lenzie Boring drew a two-out walk.
Denise Swanson reached on a dropped third-strike, which allowed a run to score. Jenna Sigg, who had hit her second solo home run of the season in the first inning, had an RBI single. Swanson scored on a wild pitch.
The Cavaliers produced three runs to tie the game in the third. They broke the 5-5 tie in the fourth as they took advantage of two Allen County errors and a hit to plate what would prove to be the winning run.
Allen County had six errors in the game. Boring took the pitching loss, giving up 11 hits, walking one and striking out four.
Sigg was 3-for-4 with a home run and two base hits. Walters had a single and a double. Kyle Taylor had an RBI double in the first inning.
Johnson County scored four runs in the third inning of the second contest on four hits and an error. The Red Devils cut that lead in half in the fifth.
Ashley Ribelin reached on a Johnson County error and scored on a two-out single by Swanson. Sigg tripled in the other run.
Allen County had two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh. Callie Umholtz hit a pitch deep to the fence which was pulled back in the park on a catch by Johnson County.
Alex Hill took the pitching loss for ACCC. She gave up seven hits, did not issue any walks and struck out four.
Sigg connected for a single, a double and a triple. Swanson had two singles and a double and Taylor hit a single and a double.
