HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School came up short on the scoreboard Monday, but remains headed in the right direction, head coach Jeremy Weilert said.
The Cubs fell, 45-37, to visiting Caney Valley.
“Although we did not win, we were much better tonight,” Weilert said.
Caney Valley hit 8 of 13 free throws down the stretch to seal the win, compared to Humboldt’s 3 of 9.
“We still have to do a better job of limiting our turnovers,”Weilert said.
Ty Shaughnessy poured in 19 points to go with 11 rebounds and four steals, followed by Connor Newman’s 14 points and five boards. Owen Sicka and Kolton Hansen scored two points each.
In B team action, Caney Valley prevailed 28-13. Tucker Wrestler scored six to lead Humboldt, followed by Mason Miler with four, Zane Sanchez with two and Breckin Guenther with one.
Lady Cub teams lose for first time
HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s girls teams took their first losses of the season Monday.
The A team ran into a Caney Valley buzz saw, falling 47-13, while the Bullpup B team nipped the Lady Cubs, 15-13.
“The Caney A team was very good at filling passing lanes and creating turnovers,” Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said. “We got in some foul trouble early, went cold from the floor, and never recovered.”
Addisyn Drake scored four points for HMS, followed by Bailey Daniels with three and Kaydence Whitworth, Adalyn Hillmon and Jadey Ellis with two apiece. Drake also had six steals.
“In the B game the girls fought hard and had a few chances at the end to tie or take the lead, but were not able to secure the last bucket,” Carlson said. “The girls played hard but came up short.”
Karis Cook led the Humboldt B-teamers with six points. Ellis followed with four, Ellie Carlson had two and Jordan Hencey one. Hencey also had seven steals, followed by Carlson with three.
Humboldt travels to Eureka Thursday.
