UNIONTOWN – Shooting just 25 percent doesn’t cut it during a substate semifinal, especially when the other team is shooting 47 percent.
Uniontown High’s Eagle girls found themselves looking up at Madison High’s Bulldogs although the first half of Thursday’s Kansas Class 2A Substate semifinal. They trailed 32-13 at halftime on their home court.
“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half. We were getting looks but just couldn’t get them to fall,” said Ken Holt, Uniontown head coach, after the Eagles bowed out of substate contention with a 61-44 loss to Madison.
Madison (16-6) challenges Class 2A seventh-ranked Oswego in tonight’s substate championship game at Uniontown. Oswego dealt a 68-50 loss to Sedan Thursday night. On the line is a berth in next week’s 2012 Kansas Class 2A State Basketball Tournament in Manhattan.
Uniontown finished at 14-8.
“I was really proud of our girls as they never quit. They played hard until the end,” Holt said. “Madison has a real solid team.”
The Eagles made a game of it in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-12 in the third quarter. Madison never stop scoring and had a 17-14 run in the final eight minutes to seal the win.
Hayden Rathbun paced the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jacy Ermel, who was 6 of 11 at the free-throw line, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lauren Rockwell made three steals and Emily Shinn had two thefts. Tayler Shook and Hope Jurgensen each had four assists.
Uniontown was 14 of 57 from the field. The Eagles were 13 of 21 in free throw attempts. They had 28 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
Madison got 14 points from Sammy Bond and 13 from Cassidy Barnard to lead the way. The Bulldogs connected on 21 of 45 shots from the field and downed 17 of 24 free throws. They had 33 rebounds and 24 turnovers.
