Iola High’s Mustangs lost a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at home Tuesday. Independence High’s Bulldogs dealt out the losses to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs lost 7-4 then dropped a 19-3 decision in the nightcap.
Iola fell to 5-3 in the SEK and overall. Independence stayed atop the SEK at 4-0 and improved to 5-0 overall.
The Mustangs go to Parsons on Monday in league play.
Iola scored three runs in the second inning of the first game to go up 3-1. Independence wiped out Iola’s 3-1 lead with three runs in the fourth and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Mustangs produced a run in the seventh but came up short, 7-4.
Jerrik Sigg was the losing pitcher after going 3 2/3 innings and giving up five runs on six hits and eight walks. He struck out two.
Mason Coons pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. He had one strikeout. Aaron Barclay pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Braden Larson had a double and two singles in the game for Iola. Clint Heffern hit two singles. Devon Conner and Jarred Latta each doubled. Hitting a single each were Levi Ashmore, Sigg and Derrick Weir.
A seven-run fourth inning put the Bulldogs in charge of the second game. They led 10-3 after six innings. Independence added nine more runs in the seventh for the 19-3 margin.
Iola used four pitchers in the game — J. Latta, C. Heffern, Larson and Drew Walden. They gave up 17 hits, which included three home runs. Iola pitchers issued nine walks and hit two batters.
J. Latta had two singles for the Mustang offense. Hitting a single each were Ashmore, C. Heffern, Walden and Coons.
