JOPLIN, Mo. —  Running in his first college cross country meet freshman Seth Browning paced the Allen County Community College Red Devils at Saturday’s Missouri State Southern Stampede.
Browning, who is from Iola, earned Kansas Jayahawk CommunityCollege Conference male runner of the week honors for his performance Saturday. Browning ran the 8K race in 29 minutes 33 seconds for 219th place.
Sophomore Travis Kyte, who is from Carthage, Mo., was right behind Browning. Kyte ran the race in 29:39 for 222nd place.
“Seth ran a strong first race. Travis had a bit of an off day but he’ll be back and ready to compete at our next meet,” said Christa Baird, ACCC assistant cross country coach.
Solomon Abera came across in 254th in 30:59 and Patrick Johnson was 274th in 32:19. Both freshmen run the 8k distance for the first time.
Freshman Patrick Pinault has been slowed by achilles tendonitis so ran the race for fun. He posted a time of 35:34 for 294th place. Another freshman Nate Bartlett of Humboldt ran his first cross country meet “and didn’t do too bad. He’ll continue to learn how to run an 8K better and improve his time.,” Baird said.
Allen County’s men finished 31st out of 34 teams with 907 points. Wayland Baptist won the men’s team title with 79 points.
The ACCC women — freshmen Lauren Trout and Amanda Sharp — competed in the 5K race. Trout ended up 292nd in 26:44 and Sharp placed 294th in 27:58.
“Lauren ran an OK race but nerves got to her and she’ll be better in the next race,” Baird said. “Amanda has been suffering from leg injuries all season but is a better runner than how she has been competing.”
Allen County’s runners go to Emporia State Oct. 1.
