Despite Thursday’s heartbreaking loss for Iola High’s Fillies — a 36-30 loss to Santa Fe Trail knocked them out of a tie for the Pioneer League championship — they still have plenty to achieve this season.
Iola (12-8) is the top seed and the host for the upcoming Class 4A-II Substate Tournament.
The Mustangs are seeded fourth in their bracket and must face highly regarded Girard to open substate play.
Both teams have seen all of their potential substate opponents already.
The Fillies have even defeated all three of their potential foes, but must shake off the sting from their two-game slide to wrap up the regular season.
The Fillies host fourth seed Anderson County (10-10) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, following a semifinal matchup between No. 2 Girard (12-8) and No. 3 Prairie View (10-10). The semifinal winners will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
The Mustangs (4-16) will face top seed Girard (18-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, following a semifinal tilt between No. 2 Prairie View (12-8) and No. 3 Anderson County (5-15).
The championship game will be at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday.
The substate winner advances to the state tournament in Wichita’s Hartman Arena.

THERE’S GOOD news and bad news for Humboldt High’s squads in the Class 3A substate tournament.
First the good: Both squads were successful enough to host opening round games. And with Humboldt the substate host, neither has to venture outside the friendly confines of the Humboldt Community Fieldhouse to earn a state playoff berth.
The trouble? Their opposition.
Humboldt’s boys, with their sterling 16-4 record, are just the third seed in a loaded bracket.
The Cubs host six-seeded Jayhawk-Linn (13-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner returning Friday to take on either second seed Eureka (17-3) or seventh seed Erie (11-9). Top seed Burlington (18-2) takes on No. 8 Central Heights (3-16) and fourth seed Wellsville (15-4) battles No. 5 West Franklin (14-6) on the other side of the bracket.
A treacherous path also awaits Humboldt’s Lady Cubs. At 13-7, Humboldt is the third seed and hosts No. 6 Jayhawk-Linn (9-10) in their opening round Monday. The winner will face either No. 2 Burlington (14-6) or No. 7 Erie (9-11) Thursday.
The other side of the bracket features No. 1 Wellsville (14-5) taking on eighth seed West Franklin (8-12) and No. 4 Eureka (11-9) playing No. 5 Central Heights (9-10).
The Class 3A State Tournament wil be in Hutchinson.

IN CLASS 2A, Yates Center High’s will face some early firepower in both boys and girls action.
The Wildcat boys (6-13) are the eighth seed and will travel to Howard at 7 p.m. Monday to face top seed West Elk (15-4) The winner advances to Thursday’s semifinal round at Oswego to play either No. 4 Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan (10-7) or No. 5 Oxford (10-10).
Second seed Udall (15-5) plays No. 7 Uniontown (9-11), while No. 3 Sedan (12-7) plays No. 6 Oswego (9-11) on the other side of the bracket.
The Wildcat girls (1-18) face top seed St. Mary’s Colgan (16-2) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Pittsburg. The winner faces either fourth seed Oswego (5-15) or fifth seed Uniontown (4-16).
No. 2 Sedan (15-4) plays No. 7 Udall (2-17) and No. 3 Oxford (8-13) plays No. 6 West Elk (2-16) on the other side.
Semifinal and final rounds will be hosted by Oswego. The Class 2A State Tournament is in Manhattan.

MARMATON VALLEY’S teams will be in St. Paul for their Class 1A-1 substate action.
The Wildcat girls (6-14) are the sixth seed and play No. 3 Cedar Vale (11-8) at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The winner takes on No. 2 seed South Haven (16-4), which has a first-round bye.
No. 4 Chetopa (8-9) plays No. 5 Burden-Central (9-11) with the winner facing top seed St. Paul (17-2) on the other side of the bracket.
Marmaton Valley’s boys (2-18) also are the sixth seed and face third seed St. Paul (3-16) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The winner faces second seed Chetopa (7-11).
No. 4 South Haven (2-17) and No. 5 Central (2-17) square off, with the winner facing top seed Cedar Vale (9-11).

CREST HIGH’S boys (11-8) are the second seed in their Class 1A-II substate and will face No. 3 Argonia (6-15) March 6 in Argonia.
Top seed Caldwell will face either No. 4 Norwich (5-15) or No. 5 Altoona-Midway (0-19) in their side of the bracket. The winner faces top seed Caldwell (16-4).
Crest’s girls do not have enough healthy players to field a team and have forfeited the end of their season.

SOUTHERN Coffey County will be at Pleasanton for the Class 1A-I Substate tournament. The Titan boys (7-12) are the fifth seed and take on No. 4 Lebo (9-10) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner faces top seed Waverly (12-6) on March 6.
No. 3 Marais des Cygnes Valley (11-8) takes on No. 6 Pleasanton (6-14), with the winner facing No. 2 Hartford (12-8) in their side of the bracket.
The Lady Titans of SCC (7-13) also are the fifth seed in their substate. They’ll play No. 4 Marais des Cygnes Valley (9-10) at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The winner faces top seed Waverly (18-1).
No. 3 Lebo (11-8) plays No. 6 Hartford (6-14) with the winner facing No. 2 Pleasanton (14-6).
All of the games in these brackets will be in Pleasanton.
If they advance, Southern Coffey County or Marmaton Valley would play in the 1A-1 State Tournament in Emporia.
