HUMBOLDT — Winning a modified heat race on Friday and finishing fourth in the Friday’s main feature race put Johnny Bone Jr. in The Prelude to the King on Saturday.
Terry Beckham II won the main feature race in the USRA modifieds Friday. And Beckham claimed the top spot in Saturday’s scrambler, which determined starting spots for the top 12 qualifiers from Friday night.
When the flag dropped to start the 30-lap USRA modified, $3,000-to-win main Saturday, the guy with the fastest car was Bone. Bone outlasted all comers in which racing was three-wide and in-and-out of lapped traffic a lot of the time.
Bone, who is from Pea Ridge, Ark., is one of the drivers who competed in the USMTS circuit throughout the season. Last weekend’s two-day event at Humboldt Speedway was another tune-up to the USMTS King of America Modified Nationals. The King of America is Oct. 19-22 at Humboldt.
Scott Daniels of Humboldt came through the heavy traffic for second place in the modified main race. Beckman finished third and Johnny Fennewald was fourth. John Allen of Chanute ran fifth.
Racing fans had plenty of action to watch last Friday and Saturday. Also running in the Prelude were pure stock, factory stock and B-Mod divisions.
Each division featured heat races and at least one feature race Friday night. The B-Mod and modified divisions had two B-feature races before the main feature on Friday.
A field of 122 cars came to the local dirt track to compete in the four divisions for big prize money. The qualifying process continued on Saturday night.
There were heat races, a scrambler race and at leas one qualifier race in each division.
When the dust settled Saturday night, Riley Whitworth captured the B-Mod main event. In factory stock, Scott Stuart captured the factory stock victory with Speedway points champion Jeremy Wilson hot on his tail.
Zachary Henery came through Saturday’s qualifying process and won the pure stock feature. Jeremy Willard, the Speedway’s points champ, used a borrowed car to run second.
Now, Humboldt Speedway owners Ron and Rhenda Whitworth and the drivers gear up for the four-day USMTS King of America Modified Nationals.
