NEODESHA – Sherri Nelson’s career as coach of the Humboldt High Lady Cubs basketball team didn’t start ideally – the Lady Cubs fell 42-27 to the Neodesha High Bluestreak girls Friday on the road. But you wouldn’t know it judging by the first-year coach’s tone after a game in which the Lady Cubs trailed every second.
“The girls played great. They played their tails off and worked hard,” Nelson said of the opening season loss. “They never gave up and they’ve improved.”
After a slow start – Humboldt gave up 25 first-half points and only forced 13 of its own – the Lady Cubs showed signs of life in the second have as Taylyn Wells and company made it a contest. The Lady Cubs outscored the Bluestreaks 10-9 in the third.
But it wasn’t enough. Coming out in the fourth quarter, Neodesha reasserted its dominance and finished the Lady Cubs off for the win.
Although winning is always a bonus, Nelson said she was satisfied with the play of a very young team – only four seniors are on the 22-girl roster.
“We’ve got some things to fix but we’re definitely on the right track and I’m super proud,” she said.
Leading the Lady Cubs in scoring were Wells with 11 points, both Kindhal Young and Sheri Middleton with six and Morgan Morris with four. Middleton had a team high seven rebounds and grabbed six boards of her own.
Neodeaha was led by a trio with 12 points each.
