CHANUTE — Anna Bagshaw dispensed with any drama early.
In less than 30 seconds, the Chanute High senior guard drained a pair of 3-pointers.
“We just didn’t have an answer for her,” Iola High head coach Becky Carlson said.
Bagshaw didn’t slow down from there, pouring in 23 points by halftime.
Her 31 points by game’s end, obviously, was the decisive factor in Chanute’s 56-25 romp.
The loss drops Iola to 4-10.
“I wasn’t disappointed with our effort,” Carlson said. “But with Bagshaw driving to the rim, they’re a good team.”
The Blue Comets, with a trio of 6-footers on the roster, also caused Iola fits with its interior defense.
“As big as they were, we only had 16 turnovers, which was a plus,” Carlson said.
Chanute led 15-3 before Sydney Wade and Mikaela Platt each drained 3-pointers to cut the Blue Comet lead to 17-9.
But Bagshaw keyed a 12-0 run, lasting into the second quarter, to open a 29-9 lead.
Iola’s Toni Macha caught fire over the last 3 minutes of the half, scoring all seven of Iola’s points in the period.
Chanute led 37-16 at the break.
The Blue Comets put the kibosh on any hope of a Fillies comeback in the third period. Chanute held Iola scoreless for nearly 7 minutes, until Platt drilled another 3-pointer. Taylor Sell’s bucket late in the period accounted for the Fillies’ only other points in the third.
The score stood at 42-21 after three.
Macha tacked on another field goal in the fourth quarter to wind up with a team-high 10 points. Riley Murry’s bucket about a minute later capped Iola’s scoring.
“Our subs came in and did all right,” Carlson said. “If we could do that first quarter over, it might have been a different game. But that’s a good team. We’re ready to get to next week.”
Platt added 6 points for the Fillies.
Madi Rollins scored 8 for Chanute.

IN JUNIOR varsity action, Chanute came out on top, 36-15. Della Lohman and Chloe Wilson each had 4 points for the Fillies JV. Katie Bauer added 3. Jadyn Sigg and Murry each added 2.

CHANUTE prevailed in the freshman contest, 39-23. Madisyn Holloway paced the Fillies with 9, followed by Kendra Sprague with 6, Kassy Shelby with 5, Shaylee Sutterby with 2, Emmie Brant with 3 and Jennifer Tidd with 1.
Iola will play a pair of home games starting Tuesday against Santa Fe Trail. It marks Iola’s second home game since the Christmas break.
