EL DORADO — The Allen Community College cross county team completed a historic season on Saturday when they competed at the NJCAA National Championships in El Dorado.
Both the Red Devil men and women finished with the highest team placing in school history. The men were able to take fourth-place overall and the women were seventh.
Both of those marks held up to their national ranking going into the event.
The women were led, as they have been all season, by sophomore Kaitlyn Shoemaker. Shoemaker finished ninth individually and accomplished a season-long goal of earning All-American status.
“I’m astonished,” Shoemaker said. “Last year I was disappointed (she finished 21st), but I came back with the mindset of getting redemption and making it past those barriers. I’m happy that I was able to make my team, myself and my mom proud.”
The rest of the Red Devil women each had one of the best races of their careers.
“Everyone just went out there and did their best,” Shoemaker said. “I’m very proud of everyone.”
Vicky Ibarra capped her Red Devil career with a 26th place finish out of 313 runners. Freshman Abby Steinhauser was not far behind and took 36th.
