With footballs, volleyballs and cross country shoes safely tucked away for the season, area high-schoolers can now set their sights on winter sports.
Iola High’s Mustang and Fillies basketball squads will join scores of others on Friday evening when they tip off the 2013-14 season. Iola will host Girard, with the junior varsity games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Iola heads to Baldwin for a preseason tournament. Iola will take on Chanute Dec. 10, host Baldwin Dec. 11 and an opponent to be determined on Dec. 13.
The IHS wrestling squad, meanwhile, will head to Caney Saturday morning for its season-opening tournament. Action begins at 9 a.m.
Humboldt High’s basketball teams also will be at home Friday for their season-openers. The Cubs and Lady Cubs will take on Tri-Valley League rival Eureka. Action there begins at 6 p.m. Humboldt begins its own preseason tournament Dec. 10 as well. Included in the visiting schools is Crest.
Marmaton Valley High hosts Uniontown in games Friday to open the season. The Marmaton Valley Preseason Invitational begins Dec. 10.
Getting started one day earlier is Crest High, which travels to long-time rival Southern Coffey County in Le Roy Thursday evening.
Yates Center is the only area school not tipping off until next week with the Wildcat Invitational Preseason Tournament, scheduled to begin Dec. 10. Southern Coffey County is among the participating schools in Yates Center’s tournament.
