A&W beats Sonic in Little League tourney title game

A&W Family Restaurant hit its stride in this week’s Iola Little League tournament. It claimed the tournament championship Wednesday night at Riverside Park.

After ousting the No. 2 seeded Fast Lube Tuesday, 6-4, in the single-elimination tournament, A&W came out swinging against top-seeded Sonic Drive-In Wednesday. 

Each team rallied from a deficit but A&W did it last and won 9-7. Darius Greenawalt pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and eight walks and recorded 14 strikeouts. Garrett Wade got the save, pitching two-thirds of inning and striking out two.

Ben Cooper, Ethan Tavarez, Kane Rogers and Brett Taylor pitched for Sonic. They allowed nine hits and walked six.

Braden Plumlee led the A&W offense with two singles and a triple. Kendall Jay had two singles. Wade and Greenawalt each had a double. Cole Regehr and Will Winner each had a single.

Rogers tripled and Taylor doubled for Sonic. Hitting a single each were Tavarez, Cooper, Scout Lee and Parker Smith.
