A litany of area high school athletes impressed at playoffs and state competitions this spring.

Boys

Trey Sommer — Humboldt baseball 

Sommer impressed most on the diamond at the Class 3A state tournament when he threw seven innings of one-run, two-hit baseball while striking out seven Hoisington batters in a first round victory. He also smacked a two-run home run to left field in the first inning. 

The senior’s impact on the baseball field has been immeasurable and helped the team go 19-1 through the regular season. Sommer also got the win on the mound when the Cubs took down Southeast of Saline in the Class 3A regional championship game. 

Maddox Johnson — Humboldt track 

Johnson recently claimed fourth place in the javelin in Class 3A competition at the  state track and field meet. Johnson threw a personal best in Wichita at 175 feet, 9 inches.  Johnson also competed in shot put and discus this spring. 

Johnson threw the javelin 163’2” at the Class 3A regional meet in Fredonia, good for a third place finish. He also threw the shot put 46 ‘2” at regionals for sixth place. 

Brennen Coffield — Iola golf

Coffield, only a freshman, came in 19th at the Class 4A state golf meet in Winfield May 23. He did so by shooting a total score of 165, 21 strokes above par. He reached the state meet after shooting an 83 for sixth place at regionals. 

Coffield was Iola’s best golfer this season and helped the Mustangs to a Pioneer League Championship victory, edging out powerhouse Santa Fe Trail. Coffield finished in fifth place at the league meet after shooting an 84. 

Girls

Janae Granere — Marmaton Valley track and field

Granere earned three medals at the Class 1A state track meet at Wichita. She took a second place medal in the triple jump, a fifth place medal in the long jump and an eighth place medal in the girls 400-meter run. 

The jumping events have been Granere’s strong suit throughout her high school career, having qualified for state her sophomore year. At regionals, Granere took first in the 400-meter run in 1:04.6, in the long jump17’ 1.25” and first in the triple jump at 35’ 8.5”.

Josie Walter — Crest track and field

Walter is only a freshman this year but made a name for herself. A cross country star as well, Walter competed in two events at the Class 1A state track meet, the 3200-meter run and the 1600-meter run. 

She earned a fifth place medal in the 3200 in 12:24.91 and placed ninth in the 1600 with a 5:46.35.

The Lady Lancer earned her trip to the state by placing first at regionals in the 1600-meter run and second in the 3200-meter run. Walter will be a name to look out for on Crest’s track and field team in the coming years. 

Piper Barney — Marmaton Valley track and field 

Barney medaled in the 300-meter hurdles, a fourth place finish,Valley. Barney medaled in both the 300-meter hurdles, a fourth place finish, as well as in the long jump, a sixth place medal. She also just missed out on medaling in the triple jump.

She impressed at regionals where she got first place in the 300-meter hurdles and came in second in the long jump and triple jump. At league, Barney claimed first place in the 300-meter hurdles, second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
