Iola’s Trent Jones and and Marmaton Valley’s Bailey Griffith were awarded as January’s Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.
Your voices have been heard and the decisions have been made, so it’s time to announce the winners for January’s Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.
Here are the winners:
Trent Jones — Iola’s 145-pound wrestler has continued where he left off from his state appearance a season ago as a freshman. So far this season, Jones sits at 15-2 and is ranked sixth in his weight class in 4A. Last week, Jones defeated the number-one wrestler in his class at the 3A level at the Eureka Invitational. This week, Jones claimed silver in Fredonia, earning a 3-1 record in the tournament.
Bailey Griffith — Griffith has been a key cog for the Marmaton Valley Wildcats this season. A three-sport athlete, Griffith has excelled on the basketball court this winter. Her signature performance came during the Pleasanton Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament, when she knocked down two 3-pointers while scoring 16 points and led MV to a 34-29 win over Pleasanton. On Friday at home versus Yates Center, Griffith finished as MV’s second leading scorer with 13 points.
For the winners, expect a visit from one of our owners and I in the coming weeks. There, we will distribute a certificate for achievement along with an award from one of our sponsors.
