WICHITA — Levi Ashmore’s first ever National Baseball Congress World Series already has been a memorable one.
The former Iola High standout delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs to a 6-5 win Sunday over the Everett (Wash.) Merchants.
The hit capped a 5-for-6 day at the plate for Ashmore, who also doubled in the fourth inning while smacking singles in the second, sixth and eighth innings. He scored a run with two RBIs.
The win keeps Valley Center alive in the NBC World Series, a double elimination tournament.
The Diamond Dawgs could not hold an 8-3 lead in the ninth inning of Saturday’s opener, a heartbreaking 12-8 loss to Arvada, Colo.
Another former IHS standout, Jerrik Sigg, also plays for the Diamond Dawgs. He went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs Sunday. On Saturday, Sigg went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Ashmore did not play Saturday.
Ashmore will play in the fall at Neosho County Community College after starring last season at Allen Community College. Sigg, who also was a standout at ACC his freshman year in 2013, is entering his redshirt sophomore season at Wichita State University.
Valley Center returns to action tonight to take on the St. Joseph, Mo., Mustangs at 7 o’clock at Wichita’s Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
