Area volleyball teams play in tournaments

Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs did not make it out of pool play at Saturday’s Burlington High Invitational volleyball tournament. Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans did, taking fourth.
Also on Saturday, Uniontown High’s Eagles shook off losing its second match of the season to go on and win the Cherryvale High Invitational.
At Burlington, Humboldt lost 25-7, 25-12 to Fredonia; then Waverly defeated the Lady Cubs 25-13, 25-14. St. Paul beat Humboldt 25-19, 26-24.
“We did not play our best volleyball this weekend,” said Stephanie Splechter, Humboldt head coach.
Against Fredonia, Melissa Davidson had six kills and Amanda Maxton had five assists. In the Waverly match, Davidson had six kills and Maxton delivered seven kills.
Davidson put down 10 kills and had three blocks against St. Paul while Maxton had four assists and Taylyn Wells served six aces.
Southern Coffey County went 2-1 in pool play, beating Lebo 25-13, 27-25 and Madison 25-22, 25-15. Burlington beat the Lady Titans 16-25, 25-14, 25-18.
“We started the day off playing well. The girls played with some intensity and a little bit of a rhythm early. It’s what you have to do against dangerous teams like Lebo and Madison and we continued to play well into the Burlington match,” said Korey Lankton, Lady Titan head coach.
Lankton said the emotional letdown of losing to Burlington took its toll on the Lady Titans as they moved into bracket play.
Waverly got past Southern Coffey County 25-23, 25-16 in the semifinals. Fredonia beat the Lady Titans
25-8, 20-25, 25-13 for third place.
Sam Jacob had 37 kills of the day for the Lady Titans while Ashton Isch put down 26. Kristin Stephens and Sarah Webb each had 18 kills. Webb also had eight blocks at the net.
Brooke Scheele was credited with 48 set assists and Keasha Parks set up 31 assists. Scheele, 29 of 29, and Parks, 47 of 48, led the team in serving.
Jenna Witteman made 30 disgs and Isch had 27 digs. Southern Coffey County is 11-9 overall.

UNIONTOWN had one down match, losing 25-16, 15-25, 25-23 to Wichita Defenders Saturday. That didn’t deter the Eagles from capturing the championship of the Cherryvale Invitational.
The Eagles beat Independence 25-15, 25-8 in the title match. Jessie Camac served up 15 points plus had three solo blocks, nine block assists and one kill at the net. Jessica Murrow served for 10 points.
Also at the net, Jacy Ermel delivered 18 kills, made four solo blcoks and seven assisted blocks.
Hayden Rathbun had three kills and four block assists while Ashley Nietfeld had three solo blocks and six block assists and Jessica Harrison made three solo blocks and four block assists.
Tayler Shook had 26 set assists. Tiffany Poyner had 15 digs.
“This is always a great tournament to attend as we get to see a lot of different teams from the area,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach. “The Wichita match was one we struglled with our passing and coverages as well as holding serve.”
Uniontown opened with a 25-21, 25-20 win over Southeast-Cherokee then lost to Wichita. The Eagles headed right into their next match, a 25-18, 25-21 win over Pittsburg Colgan. They also downed Yates Center 25-9, 25-9 and got past West Elk 25-21, 25-20.
“The girls made the adjustments we needed and got back on track. In the West Elk and Independence matches, our front two stepped up and played the net well. We still have work to do to continue to improve,” Hall said.
In the Southeast match, Poyner served nine points and had 18 digs. Shook put up 26 set assists while Ermel had 12 kills, Camac had seven kills and Nietfeld had six kills.
Against Wichita Defenders, Emel served five points and had 11 kills, Shook had five service points and 31 assists. Nietfeld had six kills. In the Colgan match, Murrow served up 14 points, Ermel had 11 kills and 15 digs, Poyner had 16 digs and Shook had 23 set assists.
Murrow served for 11 points against Yates Center. Ermel had seven kills and Camac had six kills. Shook had 11 assists and Lauren Rockhold had eight assists. Poyner had 15 digs.
Against West Elk, Camac had nine service poinits, two kills, three solo blocks and nine block assists. Hayden Rathbun served eight points. Ermel downed 16 kills while Harrison had nine block assists. Shook had 28 set assists and Poyner had 16 digs.
