MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s volleyball team was able to conquer an old rival Saturday.

But the Wildcats weren’t able to dispatch a second.

It was Marmaton Valley that prevailed over Crest, 25-21 and 25-18, in their opening-round matchup.

But the Wildcats couldn’t keep up with top-seeded St. Paul in the semifinals, falling 25-19 and 25-12.

Marmaton Valley ends the season with a 24-14 record, while Crest winds up at 18-17.

In one of the surprises of the postseason, St. Paul will not advance to the state, however.

The Indians (28-5) struggled against second-seeded Burlingame in the substate championship, falling 25-11 and 25-11.

ELSEWHERE, Yates Center saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Class 2A Substate Tournament in Lyndon. The Wildcats (18-21) fell in the opening round to host Lyndon, 25-15 and 25-10.)

And Southern Coffey County had no answers in the Class 1A-II Substate title match for powerhouse Lebo, falling 25-11 and 25-15.

The Lady Titans secured a title shot by winning its first two matches of the day, 25-2 and 25-6 over winless Chetopa and 25-20 and 25-20 over Marais des Cygnes Valley. Southern Coffey County ends with an 18-15 mark.
