Uniontown High’s Eagles were tested Tuesday night on the road at Girard. The Eagles came away with wins over Girard and Erie in non-league volleyball action.
Yates Center High’s Wildcats opened their season on the road with Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats and the Crest High Lady Lancers. All three area teams played at Madison Tuesday.
At Girard, Uniontown came out on top of a tight first game and won 25-23, 25-16 over its host. Then after sitting out a match, the Eagles had a slow start against Erie.
“We struggled with our passing and were a bit hesitant at times,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach.
“But I’m extremely proud of the way the girls fought back.”
Dropping the first game 25-19, the Eagles rallied to win the next two games 25-12, 25-12. With the win the Eagles improved to 8-0 on the season.
In the Girard match, Uniontown got eight service points from Tayler Shook and she had 14 set assists. At the net, Jacy Ermel downed five kills while Jessie Camac and Jessica Harrison each had four kills. Ashley Nietfeld made two solo blocks and four block assists.
Against Erie, Camac served for 14 points and had three kills. Jessica Murrow served up 10 points. Ermel delivered 12 kills, had three solo blocks and four block assists. Nietfeld had three kills, two solo blocks and four block assists.
Uniontown’s junior varsity lost 25-18, 26-24 to Girard. Kelsey Mathis served eight points while Paige Stainbrook and Abby Dixon had seven service points each. The Eagle JV beat Erie 25-13, 25-11 led by Dixon’s 11 served points. Hope Jurgensen and Hannah Travis each had a kill.

THREE AREA teams were at Madison Tuesday. Crest went 2-1 taking matches from Marmaton Valley and Yates Center. Crest lost to Madison.
Crest defeated Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats 28-26, 17-25, 25-22. Marmaton Valley beat Yates Center 25-14, 25-19 and lost to Madison 25-18, 25-14.
Yates Center also lost to Madison.
“It was a hot ride up there and the gym was hot. We battled but we need to all get healthy,” said Lindsay Ermel, MVHS head coach, whose team is 4-5.
Marmaton Valley’s starting setter Molly McEwan is out with a knee injury.
Kayla McNutt played with a foot injury Tuesday night.
Maggie Meiwes led the MVHS net attack with 15 kills. Cheyanne Miller had eight kills and 25 set assists. Lydia Lance had 12 assists.
McNutt had five kills and five service aces while Hannah Endicott had four kills and five aces.
Morgan Henry served up seven aces and had three kills.
Kaitlin Ensminger served 13 straight points in the win over Yates Center. She had four ace serves.
Kailey Boyd came up with 28 digs and Kacie Shadden had 18 digs.
Yates Center is coached by first-year head coach Carrie Cummings. She said her varsity team had a tough start to the season going 0-3. “But the junior varsity played well Tuesday night,” she said.
Crest also has a new coach in Lori Hart. The Lady Lan-cers are 4-3 on the season.
