Area teams play in tournaments

Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans won one match and lost two apiece in Saturday’s Burlington High Invitational volleyball tournament.
Uniontown High’s Eagles whipped through pool play unscathed at Saturday’s Cherryvale High Invitational. It was in bracket play the Eagles faltered, losing to Independence 25-23, 25-13 and to Southeast High of Cherokee 25-15, 25-18.
Humboldt and Southern Coffey County did not meet in the Burlington tournament.
Humboldt lost to Lebo 25-6, 25-19 and Fredonia got past Humboldt 18-25, 25-19, 25-21. The Lady Cubs claimed a 25-15, 24-26, 25-5 win over St. Paul.
“We played the net very well against St. Paul. We were aggressive and our kill numbers reflect that. We had a letdown in the second set. We need to learn how to win in two sets,” said Stephanie Splechter. Humboldt head coach.
Sheri Middleton pounded down 10 kills and put up eight blocks at the net against St. Paul. Hannah McCall had seven kills and Kindahl Young had six kills and two blocks. Kayle Riebel  had five kills and four blocks.
Anna Setter and Morgan Morris both were credited with 11 set assists. Young served up 22 points in the match, including eight aces. Taylyn Wells had three ace serves and made seven defensive digs.
In the Fredonia match, Middleton amassed 10 blocks and seven kills at the net for the Lady Cubs. Young had five kills and four ace serves. Darrah Tinkler  delivered four kills and three blocks and McCall had four kills.
Wells served 17 points and had five ace serves. She also had five digs. McCall came up with seven digs. Setter had nine assists and Morris had five assists.
“We were up 20-15 in the third second and let it slip away,” Splechter said of the Fredonia match. “Against Lebo, we were not awake for that match.”
Setter was credited with five set assists and three kills in the Lebo match. Young had three kills. McCall had two kills and five digs and Wells had four digs.
Southern Coffey County did serve well in its three matches. Lady Titan head coach Jeff True said his team served at a 96 percent clip (85 of 89).
“We still have to be more consistent from match to match,” True said. “We are showing improvement in many areas of our game.”
The Lady Titans lost 25-6, 25-10 to Burlington. They notched a 25-19, 25-19 win over Waverly then lost 25-15, 25-20 to Madison.
Ashton Isch led the Southern Coffey County net attack with 11 kills on the day. She also served six aces. Katelynn Rogers had 15 set assists and Jenna Witteman had 12 digs.

AT CHERRYVALE, Uniontown found out the importance of holding serve. The Eagles rolled out of their pool 4-0 but ran into problems in the semifinals of the tournament.
“We struggled holding serve for more than one serve at a time. When you work hard to get the ball back on your side and earn the opportunity to serve and miss, it is frustrating for all,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach.
“We didn’t pass very well as a team in our last two matches.”
Against Independence, Abby Dixon served for five points. Ashley Nietfeld downed six kills while Hannah Travis and Hope Jurgensen each had three solo blocks. Tayler Shook had 15 set assists.
In the third-place match with Southeast, Dixon served up seven points and Shook had 11 assists. Nietfeld put down five kills at the net while Jurgensen had four kills and Hayden Rathbun had two kills.
Pool matches
Uniontown over Neodesha 25-21, 25-20. Dixon served 10 points. Shook had 12 assists. Rathbun had seven kills, Jurgensen, Nietfeld each had six kills and Travis had three solo blocks.
Uniontown over Wichita Defenders 20-25, 25-17, 25-21. Shook served for 11 points and had 17 set assists. Rathbun had 12 kills and two solo blocks and Nietfeld had nine kills and three blocks.
Uniontown over Cherryvale 25-13, 25-11. Dixon served 12 points, 11 consecutively, and Shook had 19 assists. Rathbun had 10 kills, Nietfeld and nine kills and Travis had two kills.
Uniontown over Yates Center 25-10, 25-11. Mandie Ridge served for 10 points and Shook had 13 assists. Nietfeld had six kills, Rathbun had four kills and Dixon had three kills.
