Humboldt High’s basketball team has received another award, this time for the Cubs’ sportsmanship. IN A RELATED matter, the Register incorrectly reported Humboldt standout Noah Thornbrugh earned first-team all-state recognition by the Topeka Capital Journal in Class 3A. He was named to the newspaper’s second-team all-state listing.
The school has been notified by the Kansas State High School Activities Association that Humboldt will receive a plaque and certificate for its sportsmanship exhibited at the Class 3A State Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson.
Humboldt took second place in the tournament, which ran March 6-9. The Cubs (25-1) advanced to the championship, where they lost to Scott City.
A sportsmanship committee evaluated and rated the cheerleaders, school cheering section, adult and non-high school followers, team and coach of each school. The rating system allowed schools to compete against a “standard of excellence” rather than against each other.
The school will receive a plaque, and the cheerleaders medals.
In addition, Southern Coffey County High’s girls earned sportsmanship certificates for their participation in the Class 1A, Division II State Tournament in Hays.
The Lady Titans were defeated by eventual state champion Ingalls in the first round.
We regret the error.
