Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat girls are the host team of a 2011 Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Softball Tournament. They had to play their opening round game on the road Monday.
But with a 13-2 victory over Oswego High’s Indians, the Wildcats play at home today in the semifinals.
In another area Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Softball Tournament, hosted by Humboldt High, the only game played Monday had Yates Center High beating Altoona-Midway 12-5.
Also Uniontown High’s Eagles got tripped up in a 2011 Kansas Class 3A Regional Softball Tournament. The Eagles dropped a 15-9 decision at home against Southeast High of Cherokee Monday.
At Moran today, Marmaton Valley (7-12) plays top-seeded Jayhawk-Linn (15-5) at 2 o’clock and Chetopa (13-6) plays Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan (8-11) at 3:30. Colgan rolled past St. Paul 10-0 Monday.
The winners of the two semifinal games play in the championship game at 5:30 today. All three games are at Moran City Park.
Marmaton Valley got up quick on Oswego Monday, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Wildcats salted the win away with a seven-run second inning.
Marmaton Valley added two insurance runs in the fourth. Oswego plated its two runs in the fifth but it wasn’t enough to continue the game. The Wildcats won in five by run-rule.
“Maggie Meiwes did an excellent job pitching and the rest of the team backed her up defensively,” said Brenda Mills, MVHS head softball coach.
“The girls came out swinging in this game. And they are excited and ready to play Jayhawk-Linn.”
Mills said the Wildcats had to stay “pumped and focused to keep going” in postseason play.
Kacie Shadden and Kailey Boyd each had a single and a double for Marmaton Valley. Morgan Henry tripled and Cheyanne Miller doubled. Hannah Endicott, Meiwes and Kaitlin Ensminger each had a single.
At Humboldt today, Yates Center (2-19) plays top-seeded Elk Valley (14-4) at 3 p.m. Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs (11-10) take on West Elk (9-11) at 4:30 p.m.
The championship game is at 6:30 p.m. between the two semifinal winners. All three games are at Manion Field in Humboldt’s Sweatt Park.
Yates Center’s game was the lone opening round contest in that regional. No game report was received by the Register.
The winners of the two Class 2-1A regionals advance to the Class 2-1A state tournament, May 27-28, in Emporia.
IN CLASS 3A, Uniontown was up 4-1 over Southeast after three innings. But Southeast scored 10 runs in the fourth and the Eagles never recovered.
“Our offense played well enough to win the ballgame. We just made too many errors defensively and it cost us the game,” said Alan Shinn, Uniontown head coach.
Tayler Shook was the losing pitcher, giving up 21 hits, walking four and striking out five.
Tiffany Poyner was 5-for-5, all singles, for the Eagles. Hope Jurgensen connected for two doubles and a single. Britney Stokes had three singles and Taylor Wade hit two singles.
Jessie Camac had a triple. Hitting a single each were Shook, Torrie Hathaway and Mandie Ridge.
Uniontown concludes the 2011 season with a 13-8 overall mark. The Eagles captured the Three Rivers League championship with a 9-3 record in league play.
