Yates Center High’s junior varsity golfers played a three-man scramble Monday at Burlington. Uniontown High’s Eagles and Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats competed in the West Franklin High Invitational varsity tournament.
On Tuesday, Yates Center sent three golfers to the varsity tournament at Neodesha. Yates Center also had two compete in the Uniontown High JV Invitational at Fort Scott along with the Eagles and Marmaton Valley.
In Burlington’s junior varsity three-man scramble tournament Monday, Yates Center had two teams playing. YCHS Team 1 of Nick Schemper, Richie Mentzer and Mason Hartwig shot a 35 on the par 34 course and finished in second place, one stroke behind first-place Southern Lyon County (Olpe).
The YCHS Team 2 of Jaden Knoblock, Reid Brant and Trevor Burright carded a 40, tying for seventh place in the field of 17 teams.
“Both teams did really well and I knew Team 1 had the potential to win it when they drove the green on a par 4 hole and sank a putt for an eagle for their very first hole,” said Kevin Barnes, YCHS coach. “Then they had a bogey on their last hole to drop the one stroke they needed to win.”
At Pomona in the West Franklin Invitational, Uniontown’s’ Seth Sympson had a 100 (48-52) for the eight-place medal. Sympson led the Eagles to a fourth-place finish as a team with a 426 total. Lyndon won the tournament with a 353.
Marmaton Valley’s Chance Stevenson came in with a 101 (49-52) to earn the 10th-place medal. Mitch Covey shot 112 (54-58) and Anthony Tucker ended up with a 119 (59-60) as the other Wildcat golfers in the tournament.
Uniontown got 107s from Chance Hoener (53-54) and Zach Travis (52-55). Brendon Wood had a 112 (57-55).
“I thought we hit the ball pretty well. We just couldn’t putt for some reason,” Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. “Seth hit the ball well all day just got himself in trouble on a couple holes (by going out of bounds) or he would have shot about six strokes better.
“Chance was the same way hit his driver and irons pretty solid, just couldn’t get a feel for the greens and struggled putting.”
On Tuesday in the Neodesha Invitational, Yates Center’s Dylan Bauman shot an 89 for the 18-hole tournament tying for 19th. Nick Schemper finished at 102 and Jaden Knoclock had a 117.
“We decided to go ahead and have our junior varsity meet Tuesday in the wet conditions because things get so hectic at the end of the school year. You don’t have a lot of dates open to reschedule,” Tourtillott said.
“With the sand traps full of water and water running over several cart paths in the back holes, we were able to get all nine holes played, It really didn’t seem to have an effect on the scores like I thought it might.”
Uniontown’s junior varsity tournament was held at Fort Scott’s Woodland Hills Golf Course.
Marmaton Valley’s Austin Pinkerton shot a 52 to finish ninth. Jayhawk-Linn’s Fred Barns won the tournament with a 42. Uniontown’s Isaac Sympson carded a 59 ending up 15th.
