FORT SCOTT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs came close to their second win of the season Saturday. Altoona-Midway High’s Jets limited the Lady Cubs to two points while scoring 11 in the third quarter. That was enough.
The Lady Cubs held a 14-11 halftime lead but lost the seventh-place game to the Jets, 30-24 on the final day of the 2011 Pleasanton High Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers were no match for host Pleasanton in the fifth-place game. The Blu-Jays blew past the Lady Lancers 62-35.
Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks did much the same to Uniontown High’s Eagles in the third-place game. After a close first half, the Jayhawks outscored the Eagles 35-24 to win 46-33.
Central Heights won the tournament championship, beating Prairie View 42-26.
Jayhawk-Linn 46, Uniontown 33
Jayhawk-Linn led Uniontown 11-9 at intermission. The Eagles had trouble in the third quarter as the Jayhawks outscored them 21-11.
Hope Jurgensen fired in 13 points for the Eagles plus had four steals. Breanna Esslinger had 10 points, which included two three-point field goals. Uniontown hit 5 of 14 free throws.
Baylea White had 12 points for the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks cashed in 13 of 24 free throws and had five players score seven or more points.
Pleasanton 62, Crest 35
Pleasanton powered past Crest with a 26-3 first-quarter surge. The Lady Lancers never got into the game.
Kurston Gilliland had 13 points. The Lady Lancers sank 11 of 27 free throws.
Pleasanton got 19 points from Johnnea Saulsberry and Teal Baker. Karesa Lewis tossed in 12 points. The Blu-Jays were 17 of 28 at the charity stripe.
Altoona-Midway 30, Humboldt 24
Humboldt had a scoring lull in the third quarter. That was the difference in the game.
The Lady Cubs were in front by three at halftime but the Jets poured in 11 points to Humboldt’s two in the third period. Each team scored eight points in the final eight minutes.
Freshman Sheri Middleton fired in 15 points, a career-high, for the Lady Cubs. She hit 5 of 9 of the Lady Cubs’ 8 of 14 free throws.
Altoona-Midway’s Kelsey Spears scored 14 points and Nichole LaCrone had 10 points. The Jets were 3 of 11 at the line.
