EMPORIA — Emily Baker, Veronica Harrison, Sabrena McAnulty, Emily Simpson, Sarah Heiman, Jordan Mason and Monica Ramsey had to face a chilly, windy day and the rest of the field of the 2011 Kansas Class 3-2-1A State Girls’ Golf Tournament Monday.
Baker, the lone golfer from Yates Center High, had the best performance of area golfers at the state tournament. She turned in an 111 for the 18-hole event, placing 40th.
Uniontown High’s Eagles qualified as a team and finished 12th with a team total of 511. Syracuse is the Class 3-2-1A state team champion by putting up a 398 total.
Rebecca Holder of Silver Lake claimed the individual state championship. Holder was the only golfer to have a score lower then 95. Holder won the tournament on the Emporia Municipal Golf Course with an 87.
Uniontown head golf coach Jason Tourtilott said his team practiced on the course Sunday and had good rounds as they learned the Emporia course.
“But Monday’s 45-degree temperture and winds gustying over 20 miles per hour  made things different,” Tourtilott said.
Harrison led the Eagles with a 117 for 54th. There were 90 golfers in the tournament. McAnulty had a tough back nine holes as she finished with a 120 for 63rd.
Emily Simpson, the third senior for the Eagles, shot a 131 to place 76th. Heiman ended up with a 143 for 83rd followed by Jordan Mason with a 156 at 85th and Ramsey was 86th with a 165.
“Our first-year golfers just struggled with the long course, hitting into the 20 mph winds and shot higher than their season average,” Tourtillott said.
Harrison, McAnulty and Simpson played in their third state tournament together. Monday was McAnulty’s fourth straight state event.
“Veronica played a solid round for the most part,” Tourtillott said. “However she had a couple holes on the front and back that really hurt her overall score.
“Sabrena started off well and toward the end of her front nine had two holes trip her up. Emily just never got it going.”
