EUREKA — Eric Carlson had a message for his Humboldt High track athletes Thursday.
Don’t worry about your times, just see how high up the leader board you can finish.
“I told the kids not to worry about their times in a meet like this,” he said.
Thursday’s Eureka Invitational featured a gusty north wind that at times topped 40 mph under wet, chilly conditions: “This was one of worst weather environments I can remember in my 23 years of coaching track and field,” Carlson said.
Even so, several Humboldt athletes did well, including bringing home gold medals for Drew Wilhite in the 800 meters, Levi McGowen in the triple jump and Peyton Wallace in the 1600 meters.
“I was very proud of some of our performances,” Carlson said. “Our girl throwers turned in some really good distances. Peyton Wallace had the plan to race smart in the 3200 and he won first, out-sprinting the second place competitor for the win. Our hurdlers braved the wind to run some gutsy races. Our boy sprinters ran well.”
Athletes from Crest and Yates Center also were a part of the action.
Lancer athletes set several personal-records, coach Megan Mason noted, including Ethan Godderz in the long jump, in which he placed second, Brenton Edgerton in the long jump, triple jump, taking bronze, and 100 meters.
