With the end of the decade coming to its conclusion tonight, it is time to announce the nominees for December Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.
Cal Leonard Leonard continues to hit baskets for the Iola Mustangs basketball team this winter. Last season, Leonard was Iolas leading scorer with 14 points per game. This year, the sharpshooter is averaging 16.8 ppg. Along with his efforts on the hardwood, Leonard signed at Washburn University to continue his baseball career at the next level.
Joel Boyce An NCAA Division I transfer from Coppin State, Boyce has settled in comfortably at Allen Community College. The guard has been deployed as the Red Devils sixth man this season. Boyce is averaging 13.7 ppg on an efficient 50.8% from the field as ACC rides a nine-game winning streak before they travel to Hutchinson Community College on Saturday.
Isiah Coronado After helping the Cubs to a Tri-Valley League title and quarterfinal appearance on the gridiron, Coronado now is making his impact on the basketball hardwood. Coronado is Humboldts second-leading scorer averaging 12.6 ppg as the Cubs sit at 3-2 to start the season.
Winter Snyder In November, Snyder signed at Labette County Community College to continue her softball career. While her future may be set, Snyder is still giving 110% in the orange and black in her final basketball season for the Lady Cubs. Snyder has been a force on the offensive end, coming off 12- and 13-point performances to close out 2019.
Madelynn Collins Collins has been a scoring machine to start the season for the Yates Center Lady Cats. In her final game before the winter break, Collins scored 20 points to help YC cruise to a 49-13 win over Altoona-Midway. At Yates Centers pre-season tournament, Collins dropped 25 points against Oswego in a double-overtime victory.
Kelsey Morrison Morrison was the solo returner from last years starting five for the Iola Fillies. While Morrison hasnt put up flash numbers in the box score, she has shown the ability to drive to the rim and get to the foul line consistently. In the fall, Morrison was a part of Iolas girls cross country team that qualified for state.
