The Allen Community College women’s soccer team has already clinched its fourth-straight trip to the postseason, but on Wednesday they proved they are willing to go the extra mile to obtain a higher seed.
“Four years straight has never been done in the 19-year history of the program,” Allen coach Jeremy McGinnis said. “The girls know tthat by working hard today and working hard on Saturday against Coffeyville, that will put us in much better shape for the playoffs.”
If the Red Devils win on Saturday, they will earn the three-seed.
The Red Devils beat Kansas City, Kan. Community College at home in a double overtime instant classic.
In perhaps the most fitting way possible to win, the game-winning goal came from freshman Leigh-Anne Bartlett, who has battled injuries all season, but managed to tough it out to be the team’s second-leading goal scorer this season with 11.
“Leigh-Anne cut it back and was able to hit it over the keeper’s head from about 20 yards out,” McGinnis said.
Fellow freshman Brynn Suddeth leads the team with 16 goals and she had the team’s second goal of the game to force overtime.
“Brynn had a set-piece and buried it into the side netting,” McGinnis said. “It was a great set-piece and something that she has been working on all season so it was great to see that go through.”
Bartlett scored the team’s first goal of the game.
“She hit it right at the keeper and it came back to her and she was able to put it away,” McGinnis said.
The win improves Allen’s record to 8-9 overall and 7-4 in conference.

MEN
The Allen men fell against Kansas City-Kansas on Wednesday, 3-1.
The lone Allen goal came late in the first half by Jordan Velasco.
The second half was scoreless from both sides, but was a very physical brand of soccer. Allen coach Doug Desmarteau was pleased that his team kept their heads up.
“Apart from the first five minutes it was a 1-1 game,” Desmarteau said. “When you go down like that you don’t know what to expect, but we fought back and played hard.”

VOLLEYBALL
Allen fell on the road to Fort Scott in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-9 on Wednesday.
