HESSTON — The Allen Red Devils women’s and men’s soccer teams squared up at Hesston Community College on Saturday as they combined to split the matches, taking one win and one loss.
The Lady Red Devils began the evening taking a 3-0 shutout victory before the men’s team lost their first match of the season by one goal, 3-2.
Women’s soccer
It took until the second half for Allen (6-4; 1-1) to get on the board but the team controlled possession most of the match and outshot Hesston through the opening half, 3-1.
Lady Red Devil Jessica Allen has been a threat for the team this season and didn’t slow down notching three shots and two shots on goal. Mollie Roberts was also able to foot two shots and a lone shot on goal in the win.
Allen helped her Lady Red Devils take the lead 12 minutes following halftime when she took an assist from Tanika Rother and hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
It took until about 10 minutes remaining in regulation for Allen to get on the board again when Gabrielle Heath footed a goal off an assist from Claudia Zahui for the 2-0 advantage.
Allen struck again for her second goal of the match when she took an Autumn Wyatt pass to the goal for the final 3-0 score. Allen registered two goals in the match to up her season mark to a team-leading eight goals so far this year.
Lady Red Devil goalkeeper Daniela Gonzalez stepped in front for only one save against Hesston as the Allen defense seemed to keep them away from the net.
Larks goalkeeper Katie Robeck had a much more active day in goal for Hesston making seven saves as Allen made 10 shots on goal in the match.
Men’s soccer
The Red Devils men’s soccer team (7-2-1; 1-1) seemed to dominate much of their match with Hesston but came up on the short end of the stick in overtime, 3-2.
Allen outshot Hesston through the entire match, 37-8. The team also controlled possession 80% of the time but still came out on the losing side.
The Red Devils came out firing in the opening minutes with six shots on goal through the opening 10 minutes. Larks goalkeeper Chris Kelly was able to save all of them.
Hesston got on the board 15 minutes into the match when Lusanda Nyathi hit a free kick from outside the box, which he stuck in the net for the early 1-0 lead.
