Allen volleyball goes 1-1 in opener

Allen Community College split its season-opening matches over the weekend, sweeping St. Louis before losing to Longview. The Red Devils play at home for the first time on Wednesday.

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Allen Community College opened the 2021 volleyball season with a split over the weekend.

The Red Devils started off strongly, sweeping past St. Louis Community College in three sets, before falling just short  in four sets against host Longview Community College.

Allen (1-1) gets a dose of home cooking Wednesday when the Red Devils host Hesston Thursday in their conference opener.

Things were looking up from the outset against St. Louis as Allen roared to a 25-7 win in the first set. 

The second and third sets were a bit more competitive, but Allen still held the upper hand, winning 25-19 and 25-19 to secure the match.

Bethany Williams and Patricia Rodriguez each delivered seven kills to lead the way. Gabriella Dominguez followed with six.

Libero Alexis Hafenstine had 15 digs and four aces.

THE LONGVIEW match was a back-and-forth affair. Allen started quickly, but didn’t have quite enough as Longview prevailed in the opening set, 25-23.

The Red Devils rebounded nicely, winning 25-20, but couldn’t do much from there.

Longview won the final sets, 25-22 and 25-15 to secure the 3-1 win.

Nevertheless, Dominguez had a sterling effort for Allen, with 18 kills, 12 digs and a block. Sophomore Ariana Compean added 43 assists and 18 digs. Hafensteine notched 17 digs.
