COFFEYVILLE — Allen Community College’s volleyball team could not complete a scintillating comeback Thursday.

The Red Devils dropped the first two sets Thursday against Coffeyville Community College, then picked up the third set in stirring fashion, going into extra time to win the set, 27-25.

But the comeback ended in the fourth set when Coffeyville finished off a 25-21 set to win, 3-1.

The loss drops ACC to 9-8 overall and 7-8 in Jayhawk Conference action. The Red Devils will be at home Monday against Johnson County, ACC’s first home match since Feb. 27.

Coffeyville forged ahead with three straight points to end the first set, 25-22, after the Red Devils had scored three straight moments earlier to create the 22-22 deadlock.

The Ravens then kept up their momentum with a 25-16 romp to take control.

That’s when things started getting crazy.

The Red Devils forged ahead 20-14 in the third set before Coffeyville rattled off nine straight points, seemingly well on the way to the sweep.

Alas, the Red Devils staved off three straight match points after the Ravens took a 24-21 lead.

They did so again seconds later when Coffeyville’s serve went out of bounds and the Ravens were up 25-24.

It was the opening Allen needed. Another Coffeyville return landed out of bounds, then ACC’s Adriana Santiago knocked home the kill for the 27-25 set win.

Things looked even better in the fourth set as the Red Devils blasted ahead to leads of 18-11 and 20-13.

Alas, Coffeyville ended the game with an avalanche of points, scoring eight straight to take a 21-20 lead.

Allen scored the equalizer, 21-21, but the Ravens ended the set and match with three straight points.

Statistics for the Red Devils were not available at press time.
