The Allen Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams swept their opponents at home on Tuesday evening.

The men (6-4) took down Kansas Wesleyan JV,  getting the entire team involved in the scoring attack, 85-51. The women (8-1) rolled over Cottey College with an impressive defensive performance, 88-29.

The Lady Red Devils finished with four scorers in double figures and forced 22 Cottey turnovers in a momentous win.

Allen got behind Madison Burroughs’ pair of three-pointers and Nadia Smith’s pair of layups in the first quarter to jump out to a 20-9 lead.

Skyler Evans went up for a layup before stepping outside for a three-pointer in the second quarter. Noa Muranaka and Sara Ortiz also knocked down a pair of two-pointers in the second quarter.

Allen led Cottey at halftime, 42- 12.

“We did some very good things defensively,” said Allen head coach Leslie Crane. “We didn’t let them catch up and played them straight up so it was good. We also outrebounded them, we didn’t let them have second and third shots which was the key.”

ACC’s Jania Jones and Ortiz sank a pair of two-pointers in the third quarter to help stretch the Allen lead to 67-19.

Burroughs then knocked down a three-pointer and went up for a layup while Evans and Ortiz totaled four points in the fourth quarter to help the Devils extend their final margin to 59 points.

Evans led Allen with 14 points, followed by Ortiz’s 12 points, Burroughs’ 11 points and Khassidy Warr’s 10 points for the Lady Red Devils finishing in double figures. Naomi Smith and Jones also went for nine points apiece.

“Sara (Ortiz) got in and did some nice stuff,” said Crane. “Something’s always going to happen when Sara gets the ball, it’s like a parting of the Red Sea. She gets after it and does a nice job. Skyler (Evans) has been leading and has done a lot of nice things for us so I’m really pleased about that. We had a lot of kids scoring tonight and we shared the ball quite a bit.”

Allen outshot Cottey from the field, 53% to 21%, as well as from three-point range, 44% to 25%. The Lady Red Devils also forced 22 Cottey turnovers.

Smith led at the glass where she snatched nine rebounds, followed by Britney Schroer and Jones with five rebounds apiece. The Lady Red Devils outrebounded the Comets, 49-18.

“Everybody is accepting their role and that’s what you have to have for a team to be successful,” said Crane. “They’re all happy for one another and when you have that kind of positive energy you can do a lot of things.”
