Allen Community College sophomore shortstop Bailey Campbell does a pirouette after scoring during last Thursday’s Jayhawk Conference opener against Hesston. Campbell had multiple RBIs during Saturday’s Jayhawk Conference doubleheader against Fort Scott.

The Allen Red Devils are tied for third in the Jayhawk Conference standings after splitting Saturday’s Fort Scott doubleheader by winning the opener, 9-2 but falling in the finale, 6-3.

After extending their winning streak to seven games thanks in part to a five-strikeout performance by sophomore pitcher Camrynn Yardley, the Red Devils faltered in game two after playing catchup for much of the contest thanks to a four-run first inning by the Greyhounds.

The Red Devils got on the scoreboard with a two-run single by sophomore catcher Makayla Hirschmann, then scored again on an RBI by sophomore shortstop Bailey Campbell, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. Sophomore pitcher Abby Marsh took the loss with a pair of strikeouts over five innings of work.

In the opener, the Red Devils found themselves in a dogfight until pulling away with a four-run sixth inning and a three-run seventh inning.

Sophomore first baseman Jena Hendrix put Allen on the scoreboard with a first inning sacrifice fly, then Campbell on a fielding error in the fourth.

The Red Devils’ bats went silent in the middle innings but found their pop in the sixth and seventh. RBI singles by freshman outfielder Ella McCammon, Yardley, and another Hendrix sacrifice fly extended Allen’s lead to 6-2 by the end of the sixth.

Sophomore second baseman Paxton Meyer opened the seventh inning with a homer.

RBI singles by freshman third baseman Kaylse Abernathy and Campbell furthered the deficit before Allen’s defense secured the win.

Campbell and McCammon tied for the team lead in hits with Campbell going a perfect 4 of 4 while McCammon hit 4 of 5.

With the win, the Red Devils remain just one game away from having a .500 record at 12-13. They host Labette (0-4, 5-17) for a Thursday doubleheader.
