KANSAS CITY — The Allen Community College men and women split their pair of road matchups at Kansas City Kansas Community College on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils (21-8; 10-3) were never able to rally against KCKCC in the 72-65 loss. The Lady Red Devils (18-10; 7-6) squeaked out a thrilling win in overtime, 50-49.
Red Devils
Allen didn’t score until about five minutes into the game and trailed by double digits in the first half.
The Red Devils shot 0-for-six from the free throw line in the opening half.
Chris Dixon helped pull Allen within four points by the end of the first half behind his three-of-seven shooting from the floor and Zabriel Boozer hitting three-of-three of his shot attempts in the first half. Allen trailed KCKCC at halftime, 28-24.
Both teams picked up the offensive intensity in the second half. Allen shot 44.1% from the hardwood but it wasn’t enough to tame KCKCC’s high 59.3% shooting from the floor.
It seemed like each time the Red Devils managed to score, the Blue Devils would follow suit. KCKCC’s Hudson Anderson hit five-of-six of his second half shot attempts while Joshua Dames knocked down four-of-seven shots.
Allen was also outrebounded by KCKCC, 43-28. The key shots late would help KCKCC hold on for the 72-65 win over Allen.
Ahmed Mahgoub led Allen offensively with 23 points, followed by Dixon’s 16 points and Boozer’s 10. Dixon hit six-of-13 shot attempts as well as hitting four three’s and Boozer slammed down some big dunks late.
With the loss to KCKCC, the Allen men must wait until their game against JCCC on Wednesday to see if they take the KJCCC season title.
Lady Red Devils
Allen’s ladies played a much more physical game than KCKCC and clamped down on defense which was the ultimate reason they were able to earn a 50-49 victory.
The Lady Red Devils and Blue Devils combined to score only nine points in the first quarter.
Shade Richardson hit a three early for Allen giving the Lady Devils a 7-4 advantage three minutes into the second quarter. Clara Romero then banked in a layup to give Allen an 11-9 lead.
