The Red Devils led by 14 points at a point in the second half but quickly watched it evaporate as Highland brought the game within a point with two minutes left in regulation. The Allen defense, however, was strong enough to hold on for a nail biter win late.

HIGHLAND — The Allen Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams split a pair of matchups at Highland Community College on Saturday.

The Red Devil men (14-5; 3-0) survived a late comeback from Highland to hold on for a three-point victory, 63-60, while the Lady Devils (12-6; 1-2) were dealt a 73-56 loss.

Men’s Basketball

The Allen men went back and forth in the first half before going on a run before halftime to take an eight-point advantage at the break. The Devils shot the ball well throughout the game and got behind Tanner Meyer’s six-for-12 night from the floor.

Allen led Highland at halftime, 31-23.

A Brayden Thompson dunk in the opening minutes of the second half helped give the Red Devils momentum and extend their lead to 14 points.

After taking the big lead, Allen allowed turnovers to get the best of them and Highland came right back into the game.

Highland capitalized off Allen’s turnovers and brought the score within one point with under two minutes left in regulation. Just like in the first half, the Red Devils came up with a big defensive stop before Nick Whittick knocked down a couple of late free throws.

The Red Devils held Highland scoreless through the final two minutes and held on for a three-point win. Allen controlled the boards down the stretch, outrebounding Highland, 33 to 26. Thompson led on the glass with nine rebounds.

Meyer led the Devils scoring with 16 points, followed by Chris Dixon’s 12 and Brycen Dean’s 10.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Red Devils weren’t as fortunate in their matchup.

Highland shot 51.9% from the floor and from 3-point range..

Allen had three scorers finish in double figures but it wasn’t enough for a high-powered Highland offense which also had three scorers in double figures, led by Kenadi Rising with 24.

Britney Schroer led Allen with 14 points while Shade Richardson had 11 and Noa Muranaka registered 10.
