The Red Devils have been struggling lately with nine losses in their last 11 games and while the team has been hurt by injuries, coach Clint Stoy isn’t accepting that as an excuse.
“You lose Robby (Enriquez), (Kole) McKinnon and Josh Mann and our depth has been tested, but we have failed that test so far,” Stoy said.
On Wednesday, the Red Devils were swept at home by Johnson County Community College 10-0 and 4-2.
In the first game, sophomore Jake Butterfield struggled to get anything going and although he pitched all seven frames, he surrendered 13 hits and all 10 earned runs. The Cavaliers teed off on Butterfield early with five home runs.
“It is something (Butterfield) is going to have to overcome,” Stoy said. “We pride ourselves on fighting through adversity.”
In the second game Allen grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the third inning and Allen starter Chase Gooding was solid with just four hits allowed and one earned run in six innings while striking out nine.
“Chase competed very well and gave us a chance,” Stoy said.
The Red Devil bullpen faltered and allowed runs in the eight and ninth innings as Johnson County escaped with the two-run victory.
Allen will try to get it turned around Friday when they face Johnson County on the road.
